Sieg-Mi-Flex migration cells

Migration cells of the Sieg-Mi-Flex type are basically suitable for migration tests, among others according to EN1186 and EN13130. Migration tests can be carried out with cloths, papers, foil or cardboard packaging, gloves and many other materials or surfaces. The modular system can be expanded at any time and adapted to the requirements of the respective sample. Every fixing plate is compatible with every central ring and every material is compatible with every one, so that the perfect migration cell can be put together for every area of application. A fixing plate and a central ring are required as a minimum.

Sample preparation with the modular and flexible Sieg-Mi-Flex migration cell for analytical measurement and organoleptic testing of migration of packaging ingredients, extractables and leachables (E&L) and MOSH/MOAH in food simulants, in headspace or in pharmaceutical formulations for regulatory compliance.
The following simulants can be used in the migration cell “Sieg-Mi-Flex”:
(A) Ethanol 10 % vol
(B) acetic acid 3 % wt.
(C) Ethanol 20 % vol.
(D1) Ethanol 50 %Vol.
(D2) vegetable oil with specific fatty acid distribution from VO EU 10/2011 (PIM)
Also, according to EN1186 and Directive 97/48/EC, substitute simulants such as the solvents isooctane and ethanol 95 % vol. as well as other alternative simulants that do not chemically attack the materials stainless steel, borosilicate or PVDF as well as PTFE and FEP (tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer) can be used. For the use of isooctane, an additional PTFE septum must be inserted into the cap.

Sieg-Mi-Flex is available in the materials: Stainless steel, borosilicate glass and PVDF available

- All central rings and all reduction plates of the Sieg-Mi-Flex system fit into the fixing plate set of the Sieg-Mi-Flex migration cells with the size 140 x 140 mm (EN1186-1:2002) for the examination of sample areas of different sizes with defined surface/volume ratios.

- Rapid adaptation to special sample sizes can also be achieved with the so-called stainless steel reduction plates in conjunction with the central rings
- The Sieg-Mi-Flex can also be equipped with 2 packaging patterns (top/bottom). The migration cell is then stored upright instead of lying horizontally
- The barrier effect of packaging materials can also be tested, e.g. with the “sandwich arrangement” test set-up.

Central rings for Sieg-Mi-Flex migration cells are available in various diameters and materials. They consist of a central ring with matching O-rings and Gl14 caps. Each central ring fits into each fixing plate. The materials can be combined in any way. For longer screws, the test chamber can also be enlarged by placing several central rings on top of each other. With the so-called sandwich arrangement, migration tests with several layers or barrier tests can be carried out.

Fixing plate sets always consist of a fixing plate upper part, a fixing plate lower part, four stainless steel knurled screws each, grub screw, stainless steel washer and PTFE feet. They are available in stainless steel, borosilicate glass 3.3 or PVDF.
A fixing plate set from the Sieg-Mi-Flex migration cell system basically consists of the following individual parts:
- 1 x top plate with holes140 x 140 mm
- 1 x plate lower part with threaded holes (M8), 140 x 140 mm
- 4 x stainless steel thumbscrews (M8)
- 4 x set screw M8, stainless steel, 66.5 mm long
- 4 x stainless steel washer “Sieg-Mi-Flex
- 4 x PTFE feet, natural
All parts can be reordered as spare parts and are basically compatible with each other. For example, each upper part fits each lower part of a fixing plate. To obtain a complete migration cell, a center ring is required. Central rings can be used with any fixing plate set, regardless of their diameter and material.

To create a Sieg-Mi-Flex migration cell, various center ring sizes and materials are available as standard. In practice, test specimens are sometimes available in sizes that may make it necessary to adjust the migration cell area exactly. Stainless steel reduction plates are a quick and inexpensive solution.
