Test method according to EN 16523-2:2015+A1:2018 for NW50 permeation cells:

1. Introduce the test gas into the test chamber of the permeation test cell (this chamber faces the normal outside of the material sample). The chamber volume of the NW50 permeation measuring cells is approx. 80 ml. The gas must flow through the chamber within about 1 minute. The measuring point of the test begins as soon as five chamber volumes of the gas (= 5 minutes = 400 ml) have flowed through the chamber. This is determined with the help of a LABC gas bubble counter. The number of bubbles per time period is a measure of the amount of gas flowing. At 10 bubbles per second, this corresponds to a gas flow of approx. 80 ml per minute. After this initial phase, the gas flow can be reduced to a minimum level (1-2 bubbles per second) to ensure that the sample is in constant contact with the test gas and that no air can enter the test chamber. The temperature of the test gas should be approx. 23°C before it enters the test cell.

2. Make sure that the test or collection chamber is not pressurised. If the gas flow is high or due to restrictions of the gas flow in the chamber, e.g. tightly packed activated carbon beds or severely restricting gas distribution pipes, too high a pressure can be generated.
